Gerhard (“Gerry”) Pirk, age 85 and formerly of Minesing, Ontario, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 19th, 2024 at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre.

Born August 2, 1938 and raised in Germany, Gerry emigrated to Canada at the age of 14. Blessed with a strong work ethic, he started working on a farm at the age of 16 and joined the military at the age of 23. It was during his military service that Gerry met the love of his life, Janet (née Miller).

Gerry had a long and distinguished 35-year career as an officer of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Deeply intelligent and always up for a challenge, Gerry went back to high school as a mature student and went on to graduate with a Bachelor degree from the University of Western Ontario while supporting his young family.

Stoic, yet warm and loving, Gerry was Janet’s “rock” throughout their nearly 60 years together and they enjoyed many long walks along the Barrie waterfront. He also loved music, photography and tending to the extensive lawn and gardens on their corner lot.

Always willing to lend a hand, Gerry will be missed by his many extended family members and dear friends. A staunch football (read “soccer”) fan and former goalie, he will be remembered for his dry wit, loving support and shrewd commentary on the news of the day.

Beloved husband of Janet (née Miller) for 59 years. Loving father of Timothy Pirk (Christine), Cheryl Kacprzak and Wendy Pirk. Proud grandfather of Jonathan, Matthew, Catherine, Jeremy, Nick, Brittany, Alex and Jesse. Dear brother of Helga Ayarra and uncle of Greg (Gina) Redies and Benita Ayarra.

In keeping with Gerry’s wishes, cremation has already taken place, with a private family ceremony to follow. Memorial donations may be made to the World Wildlife Fund Canada and are greatly appreciated by the family.
