It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Alix Mary Lipskie, who passed away on October 28, 2026, at the age of 89. Alix was most recently a resident of Amica Little Lake Retirement Residence in Barrie, Ontario.
Alix leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, resilience, and a lifelong commitment to accepting others just as they are. She embraced individuality, welcomed people without judgment, and believed that everyone deserved to be accepted, valued, and loved for who they were. Guided by her deep faith and abiding respect for Indigenous teachings, Alix sought to live with kindness, humility, and compassion, recognizing the connections we share with one another and the world around us.
Born in Toronto and raised in Elmira, Ontario, Alix pursued her university education at Ursuline College in London, Ontario, which was operated by the Ursuline Sisters (nuns), with the goal of becoming a teacher. She went on to dedicate more than 30 years to teaching, inspiring generations of students through both her profession and the example she set through her own life. She believed that being different was something to celebrate and that kindness and acceptance could make a lasting difference. Her classroom was a place where individuality was welcomed, differences were respected, and everyone deserved to feel that they belonged.
Alix's compassion extended far beyond the classroom. Her faith was central to her life, guiding her commitment to caring for others and recognizing the inherent worth of every person. She also held a deep love and respect for Indigenous teachings, embracing their wisdom about our relationships with one another, the importance of community, and our responsibility to care for the world we share. These beliefs were reflected in the inclusive and compassionate way she lived her life.
Alix was deeply involved with the Barrie chapter of Grandmothers to Grandmothers and later founded the Midland chapter, Grandmothers to Grandmothers, In Grandmothers Hands Huronia Chapter. Through the Stephen Lewis Foundation, this initiative supports life-enhancing programs led by grandmothers in Africa, demonstrating to the world the importance of older women's leadership in reclaiming hope and building resilience within their communities. Alix's dedication reflected her generous spirit, her belief in the strength of women, and her desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
Alix will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Alexa, her angel, and son-in-law, Peter; her granddaughters, Alyssa (Eric) and Danielle (Jim); her son, Robert, and daughter-in-law, Louise; and her granddaughter, Olivia. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Robert, in 2005.
Alix was also dearly loved by her husband's stepbrother, Brian, and his wife, Shelley, of Kitchener, along with their daughters, Julia and Abbey, and son, Matthew. She will also be fondly remembered by her extended family, including nieces and nephews in New England, Los Angeles, Toronto, and Sydney, Nova Scotia. She was predeceased by her sister, Jane, and her brother, Gordon.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations toward the creation of a mural at St. John Vianney Catholic School, where Alix taught for more than 20 years. The mural will serve as a lasting tribute to her vibrant personality, her love of individuality, her deep compassion, and her unwavering belief that everyone deserves to be celebrated for who they are.
It is the family's hope that this mural will inspire generations of students to embrace their uniqueness, welcome others without judgment, respect the wisdom and teachings of others, and carry forward the message that so beautifully reflects Alix's life:
All are different, all are connected, and all are loved.
