It is with profound sadness that his family announces the peaceful passing of Douglas Ernest Eves on Tuesday, July 28th, 2026, at the Mill Creek Care Centre in Barrie, Ontario, at the age of 73.
Born on December 5th, 1952, in Port Hope, Ontario, Doug lived a life defined by kindness, dedication, laughter, and an unwavering devotion to his family, his students, and the many lives he touched throughout his journey.
Doug shared 50 wonderful years of marriage with the love of his life, Diane (née Stafford). Their story began while studying at Queen's University, where they met and built the foundation for a lifetime of love, partnership, and adventure. Together they created a home filled with warmth, laughter, and unconditional support. He was the beloved and proud father of Sarah (Ben), Meghan (Kyle), and Daniel (Vanessa), and an adoring grandfather to Sam, Norah, and Eli. Doug will be lovingly remembered by his sisters, Nancy and Deborah, and by his brother, Kevin (Lynn). He was predeceased by his beloved parents, Ernest and Helen Eves.
A gifted educator, Doug dedicated 30 years to teaching mathematics at Barrie Central Collegiate, from 1976 until his retirement in 2006. He was passionate about helping young people succeed and was respected not only as a teacher but also as a basketball coach, mentoring countless students both inside and outside the classroom. The strong friendships that Doug built with his many Central colleagues lasted throughout their lives.
Doug embraced all aspects of his life with enthusiasm. He was a lifelong athlete, and he nurtured and supported a love of sport with his children and grandchildren. As an avid runner, Doug appreciated the discipline, solitude, and camaraderie that came with the challenge of training and competing. Doug was a “doer of things”; he was a builder and fixer, and he often worked on projects around his home in the Woods, as well as for his kids and grandkids. In retirement, he became a talented cook who took great joy in experimenting and preparing creative meals for his family. Doug and Diane shared a love of travel, creating cherished memories around the world, though no destination ever captured his heart quite like Barbados, a place where he found peace, happiness, and complete relaxation.
Doug was a devoted husband and friend, and an exceptional Dad and Grandpa. Endlessly reliable, he supported those he loved in everything they did. He had a keen and mischievous mind, and a well-honed ability to gently advise and solve problems. Doug always allowed his loved ones to believe that anything was possible.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Doug’s friends Sue and Gaspard, and to the compassionate staff of Mill Creek Care Centre for the exceptional care, kindness, and dignity shown to Doug throughout his time there.
A Celebration of Doug's life will be held at the Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home, 30 Worsley St., Barrie on Saturday, August 22nd, from 2-4 pm with family tributes taking place at 2:45 pm. In keeping with Doug’s wishes, cremation has taken place.
