SOWMAN, Joy

Passed peacefully after a brief illness at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre, Barrie on November 12th, 2021 at the age of 81.  Beloved wife and best friend of James Sowman.  Loving mother of Ken (Laurie) and Rick (Dawn).  Cherished grandmother of Corey, Riley, Josh, Darick, Anita, Chad, and great grandmother of Hart, Palmer, and Zack.

Joy loved her family, her friends, and her community.  She enjoyed travelling and experiencing all of the different cultures.  Family camping trips were a highlight for Joy, and she always enjoyed her ladies golf nights and mixed bowling league, or even just being a part of Jim’s baseball team as the official score keeper.  Having spent many years as a bookkeeper for local Barrie businesses, this just came naturally to her.  Joy was a long-time member of Collier United Church and at St. Andrew’s Church, and spent many years as an organizer and operator of the CGIT (Canadian Girls In Training).  Her welcoming smile was a fixture at the Barrie farmer’s market, where she would display her hobby of painting on shirts, even if only to enjoy the social time with local families.

Visitation will take place at the Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home, 30 Worsley St., Barrie on Tuesday, November 16th, 2021 from 4 – 7 p.m. with a memorial service to be held in the Chapel on Wednesday, November 17th at 1 p.m. and online via livestream.  Interment to follow at Knox Presbyterian Cemetery, Oro.

Masks, physical distancing, and capacity limitations are mandatory.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Joy’s memory may be made to the Canadian Mental Health Association and are greatly appreciated by the family.
