It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear mother, Phyllis Pedlow (née Heathwood), on Friday, May 9, 2025, in her 89th year. We were honoured to be by her side.
Beloved wife of the late Victor James Pedlow, and much-loved and respected mother of Stephen (Therese) of Barrie, Anna Marie Reynolds (Donald) of Gravenhurst, and Deborah (Ed) May of Barrie. Cherished grandmother of Sam and Halli, Shane and Jason, Mandie and Brittney, and proud great-grandmother to Ayla, Kyrin, Eilish, Kaleb, Lux, Finnlay, Tyson, Myles, Ryder, and Savannah.
In July 1957, Mom bravely journeyed to Canada aboard the Greek ship T.S.S. Columbia, joining our father, who had arrived a few months earlier in April, during a time when Canada had just opened its doors to immigration. At only 21 years old, and with young Stephen by her side, she left behind her family, friends, and all her worldly possessions in pursuit of a new life. She and Dad shared 38 beautiful years of marriage until his passing.
Though quiet by nature, Mom possessed fierce determination and a deep well of love. Our home was always filled with Irish music and the deep bond our parents shared while raising the three of us. They worked tirelessly, even cleaning the Gray Coach (Barrie Bus Terminal) late at night, saving every penny to visit loved ones back in Ireland.
Mom had many joys in life: the rhythmic click of her knitting needles, summer camping trips, winter escapes to Florida, peaceful beach walks, and of course, her cherished trips back to Ireland. She and Dad enjoyed dancing, bowling and playing cards together.
She was especially proud of her work at Barrie Central Collegiate high school, where she began in the cafeteria and eventually became the supervisor for Beaver Foods within the school. She took pride in starting early each day, turning on the lights and firing up the ovens. In retirement, she generously volunteered at Royal Victoria Hospital (RVH) for many years in the café royal.
Those who knew Mom will remember her unwavering pride in her home and family. She always made everyone feel welcome and loved to share stories about our grandparents and her life with Dad. For many years, she kept the house at Glen Court immaculate before moving to Tollendale Village, and later, Whispering Pines in Barrie. Whispering Pines was a bright, joyful place filled with music, warmth, and wonderful people—it truly felt like a cruise ship, and Mom adored the activities there.
Mom loved her tea and cookies and always had the kettle ready for a visit. Her hugs were legendary, especially for her grandchildren. Despite her hands being riddled with arthritis, she still found ways to create something special for each grandchild—she sure loved her wool.
We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Ryan, Mom’s nurse, who kept her comfortable in her final days. Mom’s touching words to him—“God bless you, Ryan”—truly captured her gracious spirit. We also extend deep thanks to the caregivers at Whispering Pines, her table mates, and lifelong friends Gail, who traveled to Ireland with her, and Judy Sugg. All who knew her will remember her radiant smile, kindness, and gratitude.
We take comfort in imagining Mom reunited with Dad, perhaps sitting in a cozy Irish pub, raising a glass of “Irish” and saying, “Cheers to you all.”
Mom
You were getting tired, and a cure was not to be.
With tearful eyes, we watched you fade away.
Although we loved you dearly, we could not ask you to stay.
Your beautiful heart stopped beating.
Our hearts are broken and lonesome here without you.
We miss your chats, your hugs, your laughter.
Life isn’t the same without you.
God only seems to take the best.
We hold close the wonderful memories we shared.
You were loved by so many.
We miss you. We love you.
Stephen, Anna Marie, and Deborah
