He was predeceased by his parents, David Sloan and Vera Ann Miller, his brothers Ken and John and his beloved wife of 67 years, Marilyn Louise Field.
Alan was born in Vineland, Ontario and grew up on a fruit farm growing cherries and peaches. He attended the University of Toronto, graduating in 1956 with a degree in Civil Engineering and pursuing a career as a Professional Engineer until he retired in 1999. He married Marilyn Field in 1957 and they initially resided in Ajax then moved to Sault Ste. Marie in 1961 where he had a long career on the city engineering staff.
Alan’s life was focused on church, family, and fitness. With Marilyn he was very active on social and business committees at St. Andrew’s United Church including the Couples’ Club and the Mission & Service committee. Every year there would be several car trips to Toronto to visit family, as well as camping vacations in Ontario and Michigan. He loved music and regularly attended classical concerts and theatre and ensured his children had the opportunity to learn the piano and other instruments. He took up cross-country skiing during the 1970’s and enjoyed it so much he needed a way to keep up his fitness the rest of the year, so he followed up with cycling, running and eventually triathlons! He pursued all of these with great enthusiasm, joining clubs, entering competitions, and teaching his children and grandchildren to ski.
Thank you to staff and residents at Chartwell Whispering Pines for welcoming him to the community and helping him to establish a new home in Barrie following his move in December of 2023.
