NELISSEN, Wayne

It is with deepest sorrow that we announce the death of our beloved Wayne Gerald Nelissen on January 24th, 2024 at the Royal Victoria Health Centre. Wayne fought valiantly and long against CLL (chronic lymphocytic leukemia), including a stem cell transplant at PMCC in November of 2022, from which he never fully recovered.  In spite of the many obstacles he faced his positive attitude and commitment to recovery was remarkable.

Wayne leaves behind his loving and devoted wife and best friend of almost 25 years, Natalia Neves, sisters Janine Nelissen Armstrong and Pamela Field, in-laws Hermínia and António Neves, Maria McQueen and Rosa Neves along with a large number of beloved nephews, nieces, cousins and dear family friends.  Predeceased by parents Jan (2004) and Nelly (2015), and brother Dru (2021).

Born in Atikokan, Ontario in 1953, Wayne lived in a number of different locales before settling in Barrie for the majority of his adult years.  Wayne spent the first part of his career in the banking business.  Born to be a teacher, he waited until his thirties to pursue post-secondary studies, earning undergraduate and teaching degrees.  His love of teaching echoed throughout the school.  Wayne had a unique connection with children through his love of music and art.  He impressed many with his calligraphy talents and photographic lens.

Wayne was a great resource to many when it came to home repair, music, computers and other areas of his expertise.  He loved to travel to far-off lands and spent many happy hours with family and friends.  Wayne was an active member and volunteer at the church and the schools for many years -- a reflection of his strong faith and dedication to the teachings of God.

Visitation will take place at the Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home, 30 Worsley St., Barrie on Sunday, February 4, 2024 form 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM.  Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Parish, 65 Amelia Street, Barrie on Monday, February 5, 2024 at 10 AM.  Following the service, guests are invited to remain for a reception luncheon in the Parish Hall.

A Livestream of the Funeral Mass will be made available on the St. Mary's Church Facebook page by following the link below:
